Doctor Strange

Review by The Ninja Master

Entertaining for fans of the old comic, a made for television animated movie about the Sorcerer Supreme.

THINGS THIS MOVIE CONTAINED: Huge monsters, The Dread Dormamu, The Ancient One

THINGS THIS MOVIE DID NOT CONTAIN:  Alex Trebek, Doctor Normal, a Sandstorm made of angry sand. Untrue Fact: Just like a Burrito Supreme, the Sorcerer Supreme comes with Sour Cream.

The Review:  If you've never heard of Doctor Strange, he's an old Marvel comic hero from way back when. He's known as the Sorcerer Supreme, and unlike most superheroes his power comes from magic and the supernatural. He's pretty damn tough, and handles his own against God's and beings from other dimensions. This movie is the story of his origin, told with smooth 2-D animation and made for television.

I liked it. I'll tell you why. I've always thought Doctor Strange was one of the more obscure and interesting characters of the Marvel universe, and this just cemented his status as awesome. A skilled neurosurgeon who loses the use of his hands in an accident, Strange expends all his money in a desperate attempt to heal himself. Eventually he ends up being led by a mysterious stranger to a hidden city in Tibet. There he gets trained by The Ancient One in a mixture of martial arts, Zen, and magic. He finds a new purpose defending Earth from creatures from other dimensions. These creatures are big, they are mean, and they want to release some demon God named Dormamu upon the world. It's not really a kids movie, it seems more geared towards adolescents and middle aged fans of the comic.

There isn't that much action here, but it's fun when it happens. The Doctor's story is interesting, and the training with The Ancient One was my favorite part. The monsters are cool and the Doctor is awesome, with nicely developed characters for animation. If you're a fan of the comic, or just interesting in this type of movie, you might find it a nice surprise. Still, it does lack from any seriously fantastic scenes, and it's not the best thing you'll ever watch. It was made for television and direct to DVD, and that's pretty much where it belongs.

Complaints:  It ended right as Doctor Strange was reaching the pinnacle of awesome. Also, there was no Shuma-Gorath (a huge monster with one eye and lots of tentacles). If they ever make a sequel, Shuma better show up and start eating cities or I'll be very upset.

On a side note: The Ninja Master invented the post of Sorcerer Supreme. It basically means "Sidekick to The Ninja Master."
