Review by The Ninja Master One of my favorite horror movies of all time, The Thing is superbly creepy. THINGS THIS MOVIE CONTAINED: Kurt Russell, lots of snow, a Shapeshifting Space Alien THINGS THIS MOVIE DID NOT CONTAIN: The Thing from the Fantastic Four, Ben Stiller, evil toe-nail clippers. Untrue Fact: The Thing once shape shifted into your favorite donut, then ate your face. The Review: Although a remake, this sci-fi horror flick manages to far surpass the original. Several researchers work in the middle of the lifeless arctic, completely cut off from civilization. They encounter an alien life form capable of assuming almost any shape, and that includes their own. The men are paranoid, and with good reason. The creature takes their own shapes, and could be any one of them. It takes other shapes, far more hideous, and it has a few more surprises to help it survive. The tension of the movie is constant, and the atmosphere is incredible. Isolated in a forgotten corner of the world, these men find themselves unable to trust anyone. If the atmosphere wasn't creepy enough, the alien's many forms sure help. Speaking of which, this movie has amazing special effects. This was made in 1982, before the CGI monsters of Dragon Wars would have ever been possible. This is a good thing. When you see this alien, it looks real, and it looks far more horrific than any work of CGI to date. It's creepy, and it's got that feeling of substance, much like the old Yoda before he became a digital image. The alien is just too cool, you have to see it. There's a good amount of blood and gore too, and Carpenter uses it fantastically. The other worldly creepiness of the alien and the tense atmosphere it builds are what make this movie so good. It's horror the way it should be done, and if you're a fan of of the genre (I'm not talking about crybaby little dead girls from lame "The Ring" rip offs) you will find this an exceptional film. Complaints: Why couldn't the movie be 24 hours long, so I could literally watch it all day? On a side note: The Ninja Master once met a shapeshifting alien. It tried to turn into him, but exploded instead. There can be only one.
