Stranger Than Fiction

Review by The Ninja Master

I thought this movie was brilliant. It was well crafted and original, with Will Ferrell delivering an unexpected performance.

THINGS THIS MOVIE CONTAINED: Will Ferrell, a kid on a bike, Queen Latifah

THINGS THIS MOVIE DID NOT CONTAIN: Donald Sutherland, a box of sweating hamburgers, Gandalf from The Lord of the Rings. Untrue Fact: A talking umbrella actually showed up for the casting call, but was turned away because it was a terrible actor.

The Review: Trailers for this one gave the impression it was your traditional Will Ferrell comedy. Not the case at all. There is actually very little comedy in this movie, save a few funny scenes. It's mostly a drama, so if you were looking for Old School 2, sorry folks. A woman writer's voice follows Will around narrating his life, and before long he realizes that she's accurately describing everything. She's a real writer, out there writing a story somewhere, the story of his life. She doesn't realize this, but believes herself to be writing a simple work of fiction. The problem is that she always kills off her characters, and Will needs to find a way to save his life before she concludes the story with his death. I know that sounded a bit confusing, but it's perfectly clear in the movie.

Will Ferrell's performance in this is poignant and touching, with very little comedy and almost no trace of his usual characteristic expressions. His character is actually endearing, and you really feel for him. Put that together with a very original idea, and you come up with a great movie. This movie is different in a good way, and I loved it. It's an intelligent drama with fresh ideas and good acting, so watch it NOW! Original movies don't come along very often these days, and when they do, they rarely attain this level of excellence.

WARNING: You do need to be fairly intelligent to fully appreciate the concepts this film brings together, such as the analysis of both story and life structure. Without an appreciation for the interesting themes of the movie, you will probably be left going "I thought this was supposed to be a comedy?"

Complaints:  A huge monster should have crawled out of a random sewer to battle Will Ferrell with machetes. It could have disrupted the mood of the story, so I guess I can forgive them leaving this out.

On a side note: Reality is actually a fictional story written by The Ninja Master. Seriously, I'll lend you a copy.
